Frequently Asked Questions

We get it — taxes can be confusing. Here are some of the most common questions clients ask us. Don’t see your question here? Email us and we’ll be happy to help.

Is there a penalty for filing taxes late?

Yes. If you owe taxes and file your return late, the CRA charges:

  • 5% of the amount owing, plus
  • 1% for each full month your return is late (up to 12 months).

Interest also applies to any unpaid balance.

How long does it take to get my refund?

If your return is e-filed and you’ve set up direct deposit, your refund usually arrives within 8 business days.
Paper returns can take 6 to 8 weeks, especially after April 30.

Can I still file if I’m missing some documents?

Yes. If you’ve authorized us with the CRA, we can access most of your slips directly.
If you haven’t signed an authorization form, we’ll send you one.

If new information comes in later, we can request a reassessment from CRA.

Why don’t you offer instant cash-back like H&R Block?

“Cash-back” services keep a percentage of your refund — up to 15% on the first $300 and 5% on the rest.
That’s a lot to give up just to get your refund a few days earlier.

With us, you keep every dollar of your refund.

Why is payment due before you file my return?

Once your return is filed, it’s considered submitted.
Unfortunately, we’ve had clients disappear without paying — so for fairness and sustainability, we require payment up front.

Can I get a copy of my return?

Absolutely.

  • Electronic (PDF) copy – Free once your invoice is paid.
  • Printed copy – $10 (covers printing, prep, and mailing if required).

Your return summary includes income, deductions, and benefit estimates.

Is a rental property considered a small business?

Yes. Rental income has specific reporting rules, so we treat it under our small business pricing.
If you have multiple properties or short-term rentals (e.g., Airbnb), reach out for a quote.

I’m a trucker — does that mean I’m self-employed?

It depends.

  • If you own the truck and manage expenses, you’re an Owner-Operator (O/O) — and yes, that’s a small business.
  • If you receive a T4, you’re an employee.

If you’re not sure, just ask — we’ll point you in the right direction.

Do you file for previous years?

Yes — we regularly file prior-year and catch-up returns. Let us know how many years you’re behind, and we’ll help you get current.

Can you help if I live outside Canada?

Absolutely. We file for:

  • Non-residents with rental/property income
  • Canadians abroad
  • Section 216 and 217 elections

Let us know your situation and we’ll guide you through.

What do I need to get started?

You’ll usually need:

  • Any T-slips (T4, T5, T4A, T2202, etc.)
  • Receipts for medical, donations, tuition, and childcare
  • Rent or property tax info
  • Banking info (for direct deposit)

We’ll send you a custom checklist based on your situation.
